"What inspired me to write 'American Way' was how my parents raised my brothers, sisters, and me growing up in Mississippi. My childhood experience at the age of seven was my first taste of American freedom, as I was raised on an old plantation owned by our family. Our freedom lay in our self-sufficiency: we didn't have to rely on a grocery store. I grew up surrounded by pigs, cows, chickens, and roosters."
